Economic migration, nationalism and sustainable development in Bunyoro Region, Uganda

Jacob Waiswa, Dishma Inc.

More integrated world brought both benefits and problems to all. This paper sought reasons behind economic migrations, nationalism and effects on sustainable development in Bunyoro Region. Exploratory design, involving KIs(3), FDGs(4), and secondary literature (34-items) was used. From the analysis, economic migrations (EMs) were made possible by globalization whose forces of demand and supply affected everyone. Nationalism was exhibited as a natural aggressive reaction to new comers. EMs risked being injured or killed for the fear of altering control and benefit of available economic opportunities, which in turn nurtured violent attitudes against nationalists. Sustainable development was made possible by tolerant and accommodating leadership. EMs motives were genuine and necessary for survival of populations bypassed by development. Fears were expected and normal just as one would react to any change whether good or bad. Good leadership was pivotal to achieve collective and sustainable development from the diverse population.
