A geo-spatial analysis of adolescents’ access to and use of contraceptives In Osun State, Nigeria

This study analyzes the pattern of adolescents’ access to and use of contraceptives in Osun State, Nigeria. It analyses the variations in the distribution of contraceptive outlets and varying levels of access and use of commodities. Factors of usage are analyzed Primary data involved the use of handheld GPS to obtain the coordinates of outlets. 1,615 questionnaires were administered to randomly selected adolescents to collect data on the characteristics of respondents and varying levels of use of contraceptives. Variations in the distribution of outlets was analyzed using GIS tools. The pattern of outlets was mapped. The results showed there was concentration of contraceptive outlets in the high density areas (60%) than in the medium (30%) or low (10%) density residential areas. 44% of adolescents claimed use of commodities. 50% of adolescents stated that societal disapproval is a factor that hindered use of contraceptives.
