Prevalence and covariates of multiple sexual partnerships among sexually active males in Lesotho

Karabo E. Mhele, North-West University, South Africa

Multiple sexual partnerships, defined as two or more sexual partners in the past 12 months, increases the risk of HIV/AIDS infection rate. The purpose of this study was to determine predictors of multiple sexual partnerships among men.. This study used data from Lesotho 2009 Demographic and Health Survey (SDHS) based on a national representative sample of 2342 sexually active men in ages 15-44. Logistic regression results showed that, employment, number of life-time partners; being away from home five times or more in the last 12 months; those who had ever drunk alcohol and the time since last intercourse were significantly predictors of multiple partnerships (p<0.001). The results further indicated that men who were in age group 35-39; having primary level of education; and staying in a small city were marginally associated with the dependent variable (p<0.05) while being married significantly reduced the odds of engaging in multiple sexual parnership .
