Unmet need for contraception among women in Burkina Faso and their reasons for not using a method: new evidence from the PMA2020 research platform

Georges Guiella, Université de Ouagadougou

Despite persistent barriers potential to increase contraceptive prevalence exists in Burkina Faso because many couples are having more children than they would like. About 24% of married women want to space or limit births in the future but are not using any method of family planning for different reasons. While it is important to know which women are likely to have unmet need and which ones are likely to use FP, in terms of unwanted pregnancies prevention strategies it maybe more important to simultaneously know which women are likely to have unmet need but do not intend to use FP in the future. Using 2015 PMA2020 data, this study aims to provide current estimates and trends of unmet need in Burkina Faso. A bivariate probit model was used to determine the joint probability and associated factors of having unmet need and not intending to use a modern contraceptive method.
