Translating demographic dividend evidence into policy actions: sharing Uganda's experience

Hannington Burunde, Population Secretariat, Uganda

Many African countries today, are experiencing an up surge in the number of young people in their population structures. While this demographic transition has on one hand posed a big challenge regarding the provision of social services, it has on the other hand proved to be a good opportunity for empowering the youth to become a productive force that would positively change the course of human development. Uganda whose population is largely made up of young people (78% are under 30 years old) has embarked on a journey that is expected to enable it harness its Demographic Dividend in the years to come. The Demographic Dividend concept has been adopted as one of the strategies to realize the objectives of the country's transformative agenda as contained in Uganda Vision 2040. This presentation aims at sharing the experience Uganda has so far gone through regarding this venture.
